Sulfuric Acid (Battery Acid)

CAS: 7664-93-9 Category: Industrial ⚠ DANGER
Also known as: H2SO4, Battery acid, Oil of vitriol, Sulphuric acid

Quick Facts

CAS Number7664-93-9
Signal WordDANGER
GHS Hazard Classescorrosive, toxic
NFPA RatingHealth: 3 / Flammability: 0 / Reactivity: 2
Common NamesH2SO4, Battery acid, Oil of vitriol, Sulphuric acid
PubChem CID1118

Hazard Summary

⚠ DANGER: Strong mineral acid with strong dehydrating and oxidizing properties. Concentrated H2SO4 reacts violently with water (add acid to water, never water to acid). Causes deep, progressive burns. Battery acid is a daily hazard in automotive and industrial settings.

GHS Hazard Pictograms

⚗ Corrosive ☠ Acutely Toxic

Hazard Statements (H-codes)

H290 – May be corrosive to metals
H314 – Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
H335 – May cause respiratory irritation

Precautionary Statements (P-codes)

P234 – Keep only in original container
P260 – Do not breathe mist
P303+P361+P353 – IF ON SKIN: Remove clothing, rinse with water
P305+P351+P338 – IF IN EYES: Rinse continuously for 15 min; seek immediate emergency care

First Aid Measures (Section 4)

👁 Eye Contact
Flush immediately and continuously with water for at least 30 minutes. Seek immediate emergency care. Time is critical — every second of continued acid contact worsens prognosis.
🖐 Skin Contact
Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Flush with large amounts of water for at least 20 minutes. Burns from concentrated acid appear slowly — seek emergency care regardless of apparent severity.
🫁 Inhalation
Move to fresh air. Acidic mist causes pulmonary edema. Call 911 for significant inhalation. SCBA required for re-entry.
🫦 Ingestion
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give water if conscious and able to swallow. Call 911 and Poison Control (1-800-222-1222). Internal burns require immediate emergency surgery.

Storage & Handling

🔒 Storage & Handling: Store in acid-resistant containers with secondary containment. Keep away from bases, oxidizers, and flammables. Add concentrated acid to water slowly — never the reverse.

PPE Requirements

Face shield over chemical goggles
Acid-resistant gloves (butyl or neoprene)
Acid-resistant apron and boots
Acid/mist respirator for concentrated work
